Republicans Hold America Hostage For Special Interests - Again

Tue Dec 20, 2011 11:51 AM EST

By dwillie

If House republicans had any policy ideas that were worth pursuing, those ideas would be able to stand on their own. But like their opposition to consumer finance reform, their opposition to health finance reform, their unabashed support of the wealthy and their commitment to destroying the safety nets that keep the elderly from having to eat cat food, republican fealty to lining the pockets of those who would destroy our nation for their own benefit is on full display. Afraid that the Keystone pipeline is yet another meritless policy proposal, they must tie it to something important to the nation - middle class tax cuts - in order to get it through.

No surprise that diatribes in support of their continued brinksmanship are long on obtuse vitriol and woefully short on salient facts, starting with the myth that the Keystone XL pipeline is some big job creator. It isn't. The only shovel-ready aspect to this is the bull$hit from the oil lobby for the consumption of he willfully nescient. Multiple studies confirm that the pipeline's job impact is both minimal and temporary.

http://money.cnn.com/2011/12/13/news/economy/keystone_pipeline_jobs/index.htm

Any remotely astute person understands that the job-creation arguments in favor of the pipeline offered by the energy lobby range from fantasy to flat out lies.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/keystone-pipeline-jobs-claims-a-bipartisan-fumble/2011/12/13/gIQAwxFisO_blog.html

Further, the pipeline does nothing to decrease our dependence on foreign oil and we don't get to use the oil that goes through it. The oil originates in Canada, is pumped to refineries in Texas and is out on the world market by a globally-based corporation.

As if that weren't enough, the republican House version of the payroll tax cut legislation put all of the burden for paying for it on federal workers, Medicare & Medicaid recipients and the unemployed while completely protecting millionaires from any participation whatsoever.

If republicans were at all serious about a one year extension, all they would have to do is take out the Keystone pipeline and change the word "two" to "twelve". But today's House republican caucus is the biggest bunch of corporate whores ever to infest the halls of Congress. They know that their policies are either too destructive or not at all useful enough to stand on their own so they attempt to attach their crap to important legislation and blackmail the entire country into allowing some special interest leach to put the nation in even greater long term danger.

I expect democrats to once again cave because republicans are committed to killing the hostage in order to extract value for their corporate pimps. But the arguments presented in favor of House republican brinksmanship are nothing more than intellectual impotence wrapped in umbrage and ignorance for the consumption of the galactically stupid.

smh

The oil lobby nonsense couldn't be any clearer:

From the Washington Post Fact Checker blog:

A key question for the administration is how many jobs the Keystone XL project would create. TransCanada's initial estimate of 20,000 — which it said includes 13,000 direct construction jobs and 7,000 jobs among supply manufacturers — has been widely quoted by lawmakers and presidential candidates.
[TransCanada chief executive Russ] Girling said Friday that the 13,000 figure was "one person, one year," meaning that if the construction jobs lasted two years, the number of people employed in each of the two years would be 6,500. That brings the company's number closer to the State Department's; State says the project would create 5,000 to 6,000 construction jobs, a figure that was calculated by its contractor Cardno Entrix.

They give oil industry claims two Pinocchios.

Most of the country are C students at best and secretly despise leaders who are smarter than them or believe in things that don't fit on a bumper sticker.

Modern politics is more of a sports franchise than a legitimate chamber of study and debate.

OUR President actually warned the entire GOTP caucus at one point a few years back - that they were painting themselves into an ideological corner.

Remember when he singlehandedly visited the house caucus and handed them their lunch for all to see on public TV!

I remember back them how he gave Ryan a slap-down along with the rest of the GOTP reps.

He actually gave them some very sound advice - which they chose to ignore.

WE can all agree that we would rather have had all our politicians working for us - instead of running the 2012 Presidential campaign starting in 2008!!!

What kind of low class imbeciles would do that and think they can get away with it!

When the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31 and the 2% increase for 160 million Americans takes effect, won't the magic language in the Grover Norquist pledge they all signed kick in and they will all melt to a pool of sludge like the witch in the Wizard of Oz? Or something?

No that won't affect capital gains which is where most of the 1% get their income from, its just a tax increase on the bottom 99%, Grover is fine with that.

      - Young people can stay on their parents' insurance till age 26
      - Insurance company can't drop your coverage if you get sick
      - Insurance company cannot deny coverage for a pre-existing condition
      - Auto company bailout saved hundreds of thousands of jobs
      - It is now illegal to pay someone less because of gender
      - High cost middleman eliminated from student loans
      - Consumer finance reform put in place
      - Tax cuts targeted directly at middle class families

One thing is missing in all this, and it's the teabagger's push to deny the president any accomplishments. They don't care about the people that put them where they are. Look at Joe Walsh. The serial deadbeat dad is filmed shouting at, and down, his own constituents. He's on tape actually dictating what HE believes, and refuses to even hear what his constituents have to say.

That's some hubris. And arrogance. All the baggers are like that.

The ones in D.C. could care less about their constituents, and the rest of America. They are taking this country down, for the sake of one man. For politics. The Constitution? That's just a lousy piece of paper to them, something to be changed, anyway. The ones we see on the 'Vine aren't any different. If it doesn't fit the narrow-minded view of the teabag ideology, why, they won't even try to consider it.

So the tax relief bill isn't going anywhere, the American people who would benefit from it won't get it (even with the GOP's precious boondoggle pipeline in it), while the baggers give the middle-finger to the nation.

          That's real patriotism, alright.

Teabaggers and republicans have no real interest in America or Democracy or fiscal responsibility or the budget. They have no plan for the future of America.

Their admitted goal is to get rid of President Obama.

          That's it.

If the welfare of the country gets in the way of that goal, then so be it.

America now knows this, and will make teabaggers and republicans pay for this in 2012.

You are very right. They spend their time worrying about important policy (sarc) like what to name a post office instead of how to help update the policy to keep it from bankruptcy. (by the way, isn't this the problem brought on by a republican congress to siphon off money?). Now with whole country trying make the holidays a little happy, they spend time to decide where to place a bust of Sir Winston Churchhill! Must I go on? I cannot believe this will stand, and neither will they and their corporate masters when all is said and done. We people who work so hard, get up every day to do so, pay our fair (or more) share, and barely scrape up enough to make our ends meet at all just cannot keep talking ourselves into it much longer. While the rich get richer, we middle-class (if we can even be called such now) just tote the back-breaking load and can only do it just so much longer before we ourselves are broken. But, I can see a new day coming and those rich b's and corporate w's will regret they treated America in such a pathetic and condescending way as to break our spirits. Can we all just get together and say, "Stop it, and do it NOW, you have enough already, and you want ours too? Well, we just won't, period! No more!"""

            I'm with you, Ladyinred1.

You know, with the OWS protests going on, and the dissolution of the middle class, it's just amazing the teabaggers can believe the American people can't see what's happening. I'd like to think they are just a little misinformed to the reality, instead of being willfully obtuse.

I began to see myself becoming polarized, then realized it is exactly what the teabaggers want. It's been that way since they cried for relevance two years ago. Heck, even Karl Denninger, the first REAL tea party founder disavows this "movement," and the obstructionists in congress. He'd be called out as a "liberal traitor" by them now.

No unions, no government regulation, no women's rights, no healthcare reform, but suppression of the vote is perfectly O.K., and by golly, corporations really ARE people (how they come to that assessment is the best example of a mental faceplant backflip I've ever seen). Now, dagnabbit, if you don't agree with them, why you're a traitor.

That's how far down they've sunk - no longer able to tell friend from foe. Funny thing is, there are no foes in this country. Just Americans. They just can't STAND that, hence they are NOT Americans.

Its temporary and Liberals are in favor of paying our debts (unlike Republican who would rather default or cut benefits to veterans that they promised until they got what they wanted and then renig)I am for increasing the taxes on those who have gotten tax breaks for decades and not produced one single job due to them. But we already knew that , it takes Republicans much longer to figure these obvious things out.

I'm not interested in lower taxes for billionaires like Conservatives , I'm interested in tax relief for all who have footed the bill since the rich refuse to pay it. The middle class.

When have liberals NOT been for lower taxes. Most on the left are for a progressive tax system, the more you make the more you pay. What we're NOT FOR is the highest paid people in the country getting all the breaks while everyone else gets squeezed, layed off, told to do with less, fend for yourselves.

The repubs don't give a rat's azz about this tax break for the million of citizens it would affect. All the house teapartiers want to do is hold hostage this tax increase to see what they can get....that's what hostage taking is about. Boehner can't control his caucus and he refuses to ask the house democrats to support the senate's bill along with twenty or so sane and reasonable house republicans. Now he wants to come out and turn it to be about the President not leading and helping him...it's bs. Boehner can't corral and lead his teaparty rebels to vote on this bill and wants to pin it on anyone but himself.

I agree sistagirl. House republicans have turned Congress into a tragic mess, this time ignoring even bipartisan legislation coming from the Senate. They have no business being anywhere near the levers of policymaking.

            Thanks much for stopping by.

Multiple studies confirm that the pipeline's job impact is both minimal and temporary.

Gosh, wasn't it the Republicans who claimed that Obama's infrastructure proposal & stimulus wouldn't create any "real jobs" because they were only temporary?

great point. you're right -- it is interesting to see that the GOP is now in full favor of a proposal that would create mostly temporary jobs.

            interesting, but not surprising.

            Here is my new slogan.

            Run! Forrest, Run!

So I can vote for a viable republican candidate!

Can anyone provide a list of Republican owned businesses that I can embargo?

I am enjoying seeing John and Eric sweating. The TGOP painted themselves into a corner. Where are the Norquist Teapublicans? I have to give the TGOP credit; they will go down with their sinking ship. I also give them credit on sticking to their guns in screwing the middle class.

There's an awful lot of hatred for the GOTP being expressed here!

Republicans Hold America Hostage For Special Interests - Again

I don't see any democrats saying "lets make the bill only about continuing the tax break and nothing else."
Both parties have special interests going on here, so don't point fingers at just one.

Perhaps you can identify for us, Chief CRD, what special interest items democrats have included in the legislation - that is if you actually read at least a summary of it (doubtful). I am correctly pointing my finger directly at the party culpable for this debacle - the House republican caucus.

The Senate version rejected by the House GOP caucus included five significant components:

              1. Extension of the payroll tax cut
              2. Extension of unemployment insurance
              3. Extension of Medicare doctor reimbursements
              4. Fees charged mortgage lenders by Fannie & Freddie
              5. Keystone pipeline

Only one special interest taken care of there.
